Metabolic syndrome. You've read about it. You might have heard your doctor mention it. What is it? The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) defines the criteria for metabolic syndrome as follows:

  • Waist circumference: Men > 40 inches; Women > 35 inches
  • Blood pressure: >/= 130/85 mmHg
  • Triglycerides: >/= 150 mg/dL
  • HDL-cholesterol: Men < 40 mg/dL; Women < 50 mg/dL
  • Fasting plasma glucose (FPG): >/= 100 mg/dL
  • Other risk factors include a body mass index (BMI) >/= 30 kg/m2, sleep apnea, elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, and hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance

In other words, a large waistline, high blood pressure and triglycerides levels, a low HDL cholesterol level, and/or high blood sugar are a strong indication, or warning, that cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and/or other chronic diseases may be in your future.
